Tristar Hunting Equipment / Strawberry Plants
Before planting outside, strawberries should be started in a controlled environment as plug plants or in pots. The red cup picture above demonstrates this initial step.
Strawberry plants thrive in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. LED lighting is recommended for optimal growth, while window sill lighting only offers about 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight.
Opt for well-draining loamy soil enriched with organic matter (70% soil, 30% play sand). The soil's pH should be between 5.5 and 6.5 for best results. Hydrating the soil first ensures better plant establishment.
Bare root strawberry plants are best planted in early spring or late fall. For hydroponic or indoor cultivation, planting can occur year-round. Summer planting should start indoors, and outdoor planting is only possible if temperatures are below 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
Space strawberry plants approximately 8 to 10 inches apart in rows, with 2 feet between rows to ensure proper airflow and growth.
Maintain consistently moist soil but avoid waterlogging. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are effective for even root hydration. DO NOT allow the soil to dry out during the first 10 days; feeder roots are actively growing. Excessive water can lead to root rot, indicated by black roots.
Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips, around the plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect fruit from soil contact.
